To begin with, Ma offered to help tourists move around his area at no costs in order for him to learn the English language. Over the years, this sacrifice has bored good fruits in his life since he easily interacts with leaders from many different parts of the globe, of whom a significant number speak English. Similarly, he took a risk and quit a government job and instead opted to pursue his dream of building his own business. Note that unlike most people who believe that government jobs provide security as far as their careers an financial lives is concerned, Ma found a government job to be an impediment to achieving the success he envision due to bureaucracy. Therefore, he thought that for him to achieve success especially as far as the internet technology was concerned, his only option was to come out of his comfort zone and pursue his dreams. Note that this also meant that he had to take a risk in introduce an idea that most Chinese were either unaware of, or were afraid of. Whereas there were fears on how the internet could transform businesses among the business community, Ma saw the internet as a great opportunity to transform commerce in China and as such, he took a risk and invested in it despite the risks that his business could receive negative attention from the Chinese community. Importantly, his ability to take risks was instrumental in helping him tap into the rich pool of investment funds from different investors across the globe, key among them, Yahoo. In this case, Ma saw the interest of businesses such as Yahoo in China’s ecommerce as an opportunity to raise funds for his business, thus increasing its chances to succeed.
