Human society and behaviour are some of the aspects that have fascinated social scientists across the globe for many years. In line with this, social scientists have sought to understand different aspects of society, culture and human behaviour. Therefore, to achieve their objectives of understanding different aspects of society and culture, some of these scholars and social scientists have developed different intellectual platforms to describe how the society in general functions. One of these intellectual discourses is structuralism. In reference to Runciman (1969) structuralism is defined as an approach to understanding different elements of human culture in relation to the main, larger structure or system in society. Importantly, this paper discusses the application of structuralism to activist campaign, #NeverAgain by Brady using concepts such as myth and framing. Notably, Brady’s #NeverAgain campaign focuses on condemning gun violence and calling for tighter laws and regulations to end and prevent gun violence in the American society.

To begin with, from a structuralism point of view, the hashtag #NeverAgain has little meaning unless it is put in a particular context. In other words, an individual looking at the phrase #NeverAgain will fail to understand its meaning if it not put in a particular context. For example, a person who have travelled to a particular region of the world and had a near death experience might say, “Never Again will I ever to travel to that region”. In this regard, such a person would be affirming his intentions of not going back to a place where he almost his life. Speaking from this point of view, structuralism plays a critical role in helping understand different aspects of human culture and life within a particular context and structure (Ropers-Huilman, 2001). Without such a context and/or structure, it would almost be impossible to understand the intended meaning of certain language or culture. For instance, in the case of the #NeverAgain campaign, it is clear that the proponents of this campaign were in a context of an American society that was marred with incidences of gun violence.
