Leadership is one of the critical components that define either the success or failure of organisations across the globe. In the past, leadership roles were reserved for the select few in the society such as the royal family members and men of valour who had proved themselves in matters such as war. Similarly, during the early stages in the development of formal organisations, leadership was mostly granted to individuals who had the highest level of formal education. This means that people at the lower social rank were seldom granted leadership position. However this approach to leader has changed considerably in the 21st century. According to DuBrin (2016), leadership is not only needed at the highest level or position in organisation but is rather it is needed at all levels in organisations. Importantly, the approach of this scholar brings new light to the perception towards leadership in his argument that even people without formal roles as leaders need to practise leadership up to a certain extent in modern organisations (DuBrin, 2016). Speaking from this perspective, I need as a person to learn and acquire leadership skills irrespective of whether I manage to attain the highest levels of job position in the business or organisation I will work for in future. The first step towards acquiring these skills is to first understand where I am at the moment as far as leadership is concerned, and gain insights on what I need to learn to become an effective leader as I prepare for my career. With this mind, I will reflect on leadership in relation to myself in this essay.

领导力是决定全球组织成败的关键因素之一。在过去,领导角色被保留给社会中为数不多的人,如在战争等问题上证明自己的王室成员和勇士。同样,在正式组织发展的早期阶段,领导权主要授予受过更高水平正式教育的个人。这意味着社会地位较低的人很少被授予领导职位。然而,这种领导方式在21世纪发生了巨大变化。根据DuBrin(2016),领导不仅需要在组织的更别或职位,而且需要在组织的所有级别。重要的是,这位学者的研究方法为其观点中对领导力的理解带来了新的曙光,即即使没有正式领导角色的人也需要在现代组织中实践一定程度的领导力(DuBrin,2016)。从这个角度讲,作为一个人,我需要学习和获得领导技能,无论我是否能够在我将来工作的企业或组织中获得更别的职位。获得这些技能的步是首先了解我目前在领导力方面的地位,并在我为职业生涯做准备时了解我需要学习什么才能成为一名有效的。带着这种想法,我将在这篇文章中反思领导力与我自己的关系。


To begin one of the questions that often emerge when analysing leadership in relation to a specific person regards their strengths as far as leadership is concerned. Speaking from this point of view, one of the critical aspects that I consider my strength as far as leadership is concerned is embedded in my ability to inspire other people towards achieving certain objectives. In reference to Searle and Hanrahan (2011), one of the key aspects that effective leaders need to possess is the capability to easily connect and motivate them to action towards a certain course of action. In line with this, I have found that I easily integrate with people and inspire them to perform certain actions. For example, in the last summer break, I talked to three of my friends and managed to convince them to visit a home for the elderly as a way to serve the community. After the visit, two of them noted that they found the visit inspiring and as such, they plan to visit the homes for the elderly twice per year. Therefore, I think inspiring people as a leader is one of my key strengths. Importantly, I think my ability to inspire others is founded on the fact that I am outgoing and have over the years mastered persuasive communication skills. Therefore, I usually find it easier to communicate my thoughts to other even in difficult situations.

首先,在分析某个人的领导力时,经常出现的一个问题是,就领导力而言,考虑他们的优势。从这个角度讲,我认为我的领导力的关键方面之一在于我能激发他人达到某些目标的能力。参考Searle和Hanrahan(2011),有效的需要具备的一个关键方面是能够轻松地将他们联系起来并激励他们朝着某一行动方向行动。与此相一致,我发现我很容易与人融为一体,并激励他们采取某些行动。例如,在去年暑假,我与三位朋友交谈,并设法说服他们参观养老院,以此作为服务社区的一种方式。访问结束后,其中两人表示,他们认为这次访问令人鼓舞,因此,他们计划每年访问两次养老院。因此,我认为激励人们成为是我的主要优势之一。重要的是,我认为我激励他人的能力是建立在这样一个事实上的:我性格开朗,多年来掌握了说服性的沟通技巧。因此,即使在困难的情况下,我通常也会发现与他人交流我的想法更容易。
