At the beginning of September, 2018, Japan was hit by Typhoon Jebi, which is reportedly the worst typhoon to ever hit this country in the last 25 years. Weather analysts rated it as a Category 3 typhoon, and it was expected that its wind speeds will reach up to 115 miles per hour. On September 5th and 6th, 2018, the South China Morning Post newspaper reported the devastating effects that this typhoon had in Japan. According to the newspaper’s article, Typhoon Jebi destroyed property worth billions of dollars and led to indefinite closure of Japan’s Kansai International Airport (South China Morning Post 2018). The article noted airport’s Terminal 1 experienced significant damages and hundreds of passengers were stranded and could not travel to their destinations.

An analysis of the way this event was report in the media reveals a number of issues. To begin with, one of the critical elements that emerge in the way Typhoon Jebi and the closure of Kansai International Airport was report by various media outlets regard the points of view that are presented, in this case, South China Morning Post. To begin with, the South China Morning Post presented a picture that portrayed the Kansai International Airport as a widely used airport by travellers from Hong Kong. In this regard, this newspaper’s article emphasises the inconvenience that travellers from Hong Kong experienced because of the closure of the airport, while at the same time seeking to magnify the failures of the Japanese airport and government officials in providing a clear direction on when the airport was likely to resume its operations again. Speaking from this point of view, despite accurately reporting that the Japanese Kansai International Airport has been closed indefinitely, there is a need to observe that South China Morning Post’s article depicts some form of biasness against the Japan. In this case, rather than focusing on the Typhoon Jebi and its negative impact on the Japanese economy, this article sought to bring out the failures of the Japanese government and airport authorities particularly towards travellers from Hong Kong.

Importantly, there is a need to observe that apart from depicting biasness in its reporting of Typhoon Jebi’s impact on Kansai International Airport, there is a need to observe that the South China Morning Post’s article seeks to emphasise on a certain identity in its reporting. Arguably, an analysis of the article indicates that the writer sought to emphasize the identity of people from Hong Kong, thus making the closure of the airport appear to have affected people from this country more than travellers from other parts of the globe (Jensen, 2011). In particular, there is a persistent use of the word “Hongkongers” in reference to travellers whose home country is Hong Kong. Furthermore, the writer, in referring to the way airport officials handled the closure of the airport notes that a traveller noted that “foreign visitors” were not given proper updates. Note that by doing this, the reporter who wrote this article manages to create a separation between local and foreign travellers. Furthermore, through the use of the word “Hongkongers”, the reporter manages to separate travellers who originate from Hong Kong from travellers from other parts of the globe.
