The shift towards democratic leadership style from an autocratic style of leadership has brought significant changes in the way leaders and followers relate in businesses and the society at large. In this regard, the inclination towards democratic leadership style in society is providing a platform for followers to express themselves more as compared to autocratic leadership style whereas followers are expected to take instructions from their leaders without asking questions. Importantly, one of the key areas that have witnessed significant reforms as people embrace democratic leadership style is communication. In reference to Carter (2007), followers under this leadership styles have seen their confidence levels grow, thus giving them a chance to talk with their leaders. This essay argues that the adoption of democratic leadership concepts within organisations promote dialogue between leaders and followers, thus improving communication.

To begin with, communication plays a critical role in creating a connection between two or more people, thus establishing a foundation for them to pursue a common goal. In reference to Clegg, Kornberger and Pitsis (2016), communication defined as a direct cause-effect relation, and as such, and an act that involves passing information from a sender to a receiver. Clegg, Kornberger and Pitsis (2016) further point out that communication management involves managing power between two or more people. On their part, Groysberg and Slind (2012) define communication management as the approach that leaders rely upon to handle the flow of information in their organisations or society. Speaking from this perspective, there is a need to observe that from a traditional perspective, as long as a person has passed a message to another perspective, this is perceived as communication irrespective of whether the other party responds or not. In the same line of thought, a person who passes the message in a traditional perception towards communication was seen to hold more power as compared to the target audience. Importantly, the traditional approach to communication permeated not only the society but also specific organisations, and was propagated further by the leadership style in these organisations. In this case, bureaucratic leadership styles such as autocracy bestowed power in a single individual and as such, when he or she spoke, no one was allowed to speak back. Thus, communication management in such a case remained one-way rather than two-way.

The transformation in communication management in the modern society is founded on the transformation in the definition of what communication entails. According to Clegg, Kornberger and Pitsis (2016), communication in the contemporary society no longer involves passing a message from one person to the other alone but also receiving feedback from the receiver of the message in question. In other words, passing information is not sufficient for one to claim that a communication process has taken place. On the contrary, one needs to also receive feedback from the receiver of the message. This feedback not only indicates that the receiver has understood the message but also enables the sender to gain insights on whether he or she is in agreement with the receiver as far as the message in question is concerned. Importantly, such form of communication cannot take place under the command-and-control nature of the autocratic style of leadership. On the contrary, researchers and scholars agree that communication in form of conversation in organisations thrives mainly under democratic leadership styles, which provide room for feedback particular from the junior staff.
